Brigadier General Larry Boyd

       Brigadier General Larry Boyd was born 3 January 1950 in Loris, South Carolina, He retired from the United States Department of Defense after 26 years of professional civilian service. He  served for over 32 years in the emergency service, including six years with the City of Myrtle Beach fire department; as a Firefighter, Emergency Medical Technician, Hazardous Materials Technician 1 and 2, and   Fire Chief of the town of Ravenel, S.C..  In 1983 Larry was selected over 14,000 candidates as the Civilian Federal Employee of the Year for the Eastern District of the United States. In 1982 he was selected as the Charleston Naval Station Employee of the Year.
        Larry was employed from 2000 to 2007 as a District Retail Supervisor for Distribution Services, a part of America Media, Incorporated.
         Larry has served in uniform with the Sea Cadets, Boy Scouts, Civil Air Patrol, and Junior Firefighters.  He was an enlisted member of the United States Marine Corps. He managed to balance an active career as a professional firefighter, his membership in the South Carolina State Guard, and numerous other volunteer activities.  
        BG Boyd is a graduate of Goose Creek High School. He completed the United States Army Professional Development Leadership Quartermaster Course, the Engineer Officer’s Basic Course, and the United States Naval and Marine Leadership Course.  Additionally, he attended the United States Army Command and General Staff College (Non-resident)  conducted at The Citadel and he attended the College of Charleston.
       Larry enlisted in the South Carolina State Guard in March 1983 and was commissioned in March 1984.   He served in numerous positions in the 3rd Coastal Brigade including Deputy Commander for Administration and Logistics and in Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment as Deputy Chief of Staff Civil-Military Operations,  Deputy Chief of Staff Logistics, and Budget and Fiscal Officer. On March 3, 2007 he assumed command of the 5th Civil Affairs Brigade headquartered in Columbia, S.C. BG Boyd has been an active member of the Washington Light Infantry  headquartered in Charleston, S.C. for almost 20 years.
        Larry’s State Guard awards and decorations include the Medal of Merit with Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal with Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster,  the Commendation Medal with Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, the Commendation Medal with Maltese Cross Device, the South Carolina Homeland Defense Achievement Medal, the Individual Achievement Ribbon, the Good Conduct Ribbon, the Longevity Service with Three Oak Leaf Clusters, the Federal Service School Ribbon, the  Service Ribbon with Four Silver Stars and Two Bronze Stars, the Emergency Service Training Ribbon, the Volunteer Service Ribbon, the Military Readiness Ribbon, the Recruiting Achievement Ribbon, the Military  Proficiency Ribbon with Gold Torch and Silver Torch Devices, the  Governor's Unit Citation, Outstanding Unit Citation and the Unit Achievement Citation.
      Larry served as President of the  Palmetto Chapter of the  State Guard Association of the United States from 2004 to present and he has represented the Palmetto Chapter at National Conventions and other activities.
      BG Boyd performed significant duties supporting the SCSG Medal of Honor celebration Honoring Valor, 30 September 2004. He is serving as a critical member of the event planning committee for the Charleston, SC, Medal of Honor Society Convention, in 2010.
       Larry  is married to the former Lana James of Bennett, North Carolina and they reside in Columbia, South Carolina.   Larry has two children, Tammy Lee Blumenburg, and Larry Allen Boyd both of Summerville, South Carolina.   General and Mrs. Boyd have three grandchildren.
