MG Spears Sings Praises of State Guard and Defense Forces MG Stan Spears published an open letter to The Adjutant Generals of all states promoting the good works and vital role that state guards and defense forces may play in their states. Citing the cost benefits and mission execution of South Carolina's own State Guard, General Spears explained that he is "extremely proud to have the SCSG as a component of the Military Department of South Carolina". Spears continued to cite the State Guard as the "most cost effective program funded by our state legislature". The Adjutant General's letter was published in the State Guard Association of the United States' Journal. General Spears' full letter is available online. America's Only Elected Soldier! MG Stan Spears leads and directs the 13,500 member South Carolina Army and Air National Guard.
